End of Year Highlights 2024

As we close our doors for the summer holidays, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on an extraordinary year at Woodford Primary School (WPS).

From academic achievements to unforgettable experiences, our pupils have truly made the most of every opportunity.

Here are just some of the highlights that defined our year!

Author Visit

We loved meeting author Sheena Garg who came to school to read her book, Myra Plays Holi!, to pupils. It helped our children understand more about Holi – the Hindu Festival of Colours. We even got to experience a splash of colour.

Eid Celebrations

We’ve enjoyed learning about Eid-al-Fitr, the Islamic holiday celebrating the end of Ramadan’s month of fasting.

Children recalled; “they only eat at night-time… they break their fast with a meal… wear special clothes to celebrate… stand on mats to pray.”

Food Bank Challenge

As part of our broader curriculum at Woodford Primary School, we held a Food Bank Challenge. The children learned about what food banks are and why they are important. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of our school community as the donations piled up! Opportunities like these help to develop our pupils’ understanding of the wider world.

Sports Day

All the children showed great perseverance and energy at our recent Sports Day. Well done to Magnus for being the champions this year!

Bethan Woollvin read to us one of her inspiring books – Luna and the Sky Dragon. She shared with us how she’s got to where she is today. We finished off with a live drawing tutorial of both the sky dragon and main character Luna.

It has been another amazing year of highlights for our pupils and staff! From going on school trips to celebrating different cultures, it has been a brilliant year full of memorable moments.

Author and Illustrator Bethan Woollvin visits Woodford Primary

The talented author and illustrator, Bethan Woollvin, came to visit Reception and Year 1 at Woodford Primary School.

She read to us one of her inspiring books – Luna and the Sky Dragon, teaching us all about the wonders of the sky. This included teaching us about star constellations and other interesting facts about eclipses, comets and asteroids.

She shared her life journey and told us how she’s got to where she is today. She even shared some fun stories about her pet dogs.

We finished off our time with a live drawing tutorial of both the sky dragon and main character Luna, being illustrators ourselves.

Sports Day 2024

It was great to see our children competing in a range of events at this year’s Sports Day, demonstrating fantastic collaboration and respect for each other. We felt the children performed with great determination and enthusiasm in the warm weather – and the ice lollies from the PTA were very much appreciated!

The children rotated around activities including relay races, hole in the cup, dressing up, egg and spoon race, balancing beanbags, obstacles, skipping, dribbling a ball and hopping through hoops.

Each child participated in Sports Day as part of their house team in eight physical challenges which built upon many of the fundamental movement skills we’ve been working on all year long: balancing, jumping, running, skipping and dribbling.

They negotiated space and obstacles safely, with consideration for themselves and others. They demonstrated strength, balance and coordination and at times moved very energetically. They listened carefully to instructions, following what was expected of them for each activity.

They were confident to try new activities and show independence, resilience and perseverance in the face of challenge. They took turns with their team members and worked together towards the goal of getting as many points as they could for their team.

Congratulations to Magnus, who were crowned this year’s Sports Day Champions!

Many thanks to the PTA for providing refreshments to the school community and a special well done and thank you to everyone who joined in the egg and spoon race at the end! The children had a great time cheering everyone on.
